Welcome back! We’ve got one more week of that camp hype we all know and love before we get to the good stuff. With all the chaos likely to take place this season, I’ll aim to condense as much useful information as I can into these emails. As we go, feel free to let me know any time you have suggestions or feedback.
Now let’s get to it!
News & Notes:
RB Leonard Fournette has signed with the Buccaneers. The Jaguars released Leonard Fournette earlier in the week. Fournette went unclaimed on waivers.
Headlines swirled recently around NO RB Alvin Kamara and a possible holdout. Later there were reports Kamara was pushing for CMC money. Then there were reports the Saints considered trading Kamara. The latest report is that Kamara and Coach Sean Payton and spoke to clear the air and Kamara is back at practice.
Bengals and RB Joe Mixon reached agreement on a four-year contract extension.
Ron Rivera announced that QB Dwayne Haskins will be Washington’s Week 1 starter vs the Eagles. This calls for a nice bit of Haskins camp fluff.
The Patriots have released WR Mohamed Sanu.
Bad news for 31 teams: “The Chiefs are finalizing new six-year contracts with coach Andy Reid and GM Brett Veach, tying both to the reigning Super Bowl champs through the 2025 season.”
Deep inhale: MIA RB Kalen Ballage was going to be dropped by the Dolphins, but then news broke that the Jets got wind of this and traded a conditional 7th round pick for him, however, upon arriving in NY, Ballage failed his physical and thus reverted back to the Dolphins roster.
The 49ers have signed former Bears WR Kevin White.
Injury Updates:
PHI WR Jalen Reagor suffered a partial labrum tear and could miss up to four weeks. Team is hoping he’s out for only two games tops.
PHI QB Carson Wentz is day-to-day with a minor soft tissue injury. It’s considered minor and the team is being cautious and making sure he's good to go for the season.
Another Eagles OL (Andre Dillard) has been lost to a season ending injury.
ARI RB Kenyan Drake (foot) 'close' to practicing in full.
MIA WR DeVante Parker Was still not dressed for Miami Dolphins practice.
LVR WR Tyrell Williams was placed on IR, ending his season.
NE RB Damien Harris could miss week 1 with a hand injury.
DET RB D’Andre Swift hasn’t suffered any setbacks, but is still limited in practice.
NYJ TE Chris Herndon exited practice with trainers Tuesday and did not return due to chest tightness. He has since returned to practice.
IND TE Trey Burton out with calf injury.
SF WR Deebo Samuel (foot) was seen running full speed at camp.
NYJ RB La'Mical Perine diagnosed with a low-ankle sprain.
TB RB Ronald Jones back at practice after injury scare.
Camp Buzz:
“John Harbaugh said rookie BAL RB J.K. Dobbins will probably have a "significant" role this season. He raved about Dobbins' confidence and coachability.”
TEN RB Darrynton Evans: “The most interesting [Titans] addition might actually be third-round offensive weapon Darrynton Evans.” “has a chance to be a poor man’s Alvin Kamara.”
WAS RB Antonio Gibson’s “change of direction is insane. He just made one small pivot in the backfield and sprinted to the end zone.” “Gibson will be a major factor. In fact it wouldn't be a shock if he ends up with the most touches of any back in the group. Not carries, but touches.” “Gibson knows how to change his run style in every situation. He’s quick and fast on the outside, physical on the inside.”
DET QB Matthew Stafford: “was absolutely dealing during an intrasquad scrimmage on Saturday afternoon, connecting on 10 of 12 passes for three touchdowns. And nobody benefited more than Kenny Golladay, who caught two of those scores, one of which came on yet another one-hander.” More on Stafford: “Nate Burleson said on GMFB that DET QB Matthew Stafford texted him after Peter Schrager said he was a dark horse MVP candidate. Nate said #9 told him and I quote, ‘Tell your boy Schrager to forget the dark horse part...I’M GOING FOR THE MVP!’”
PIT WR Chase Claypool hype is out of control: "...Right now he looks like an absolute steal." "He stands out daily." From QB Ben Roethlisberger: “says he avoids talking up rookies so they can catch teams by surprise, but on Chase Claypool: "It doesn't look like he'll be able to sneak up on anybody now.’” Tweet from his teammate TE Eric Ebron: “today showed me [Chase Claypool] will be a PROBLEM in this league.” Beat writer: “Do not wonder if the Steelers will find ways to get Claypool involved in the offense, even though he is a rookie who had no OTAs, minicamp or preseason games. They will. Quickly.”
JAX WR Laviska Shenault: “Has caught nearly every pass thrown to him.” “Showed he could fight through press coverage and run precise routes on either side of the field” From QB Gardner Minshew: “Laviska is a freak, man. I knew it when we played him at Colorado,” “He’s a lot better route runner, a lot better at catching the ball than I even expected.”
TEN WR A.J. Brown: "A.J., he constantly wants feedback, constantly wants to know what he can work on." "Earlier this offseason, Brown said he's worked tirelessly to improve for his second NFL season. In addition to watching film and working out, part of his routine also included catching 1,000 footballs a day."
TB TE O.J. Howard: “has been the offensive star in training camp for the Bucs. He looks focused and ready to have the breakout year everyone has been waiting for."
QB Joe Burrow on CIN WR Tyler Boyd: “TB is going to have a big season. I have a great connection with him right now.”
Giants think TE Evan Engram can “top 1,000 yards easily.”
“RB I think this helps for Jaguars UDFA [RB] James Robinson. Had a good scrimmage on Saturday and has flashed in camp.”
“The Athletic's Matt Schneidman expects [GB TE] Robert Tonyan to open the season as the Packers' top pass-catching tight end.”
PHI WR JJ Arcega-Whiteside “has been very impressive. Of course he’ll need to start doing this in games for many to believe in him, but you can’t take away what he’s done in camp either. He’s been really good and very consistent. The best signs are his ability in the RZ and his confidence level.”
Tom Brady gushing about TB WR Scotty Miller. (video)
HOU TE Jordan Akins: "During training camp, it's been evident that quarterback Deshaun Watson trusts Akins to get open and catch the ball. Akins has delivered several big plays and touchdowns. An expanded role could be in the offing for the former Texas Rangers minor league baseball player."
BUF RB Zack Moss: "The [Play of the day] out of the backfield came on a downhill run from Moss, who exploded through the line and met Dean Marlowe at the 2nd level and absolutely destroyed him. He ran him over. He also had a few nice plays in the passing game, highlighted by a 20 yd completion from Allen."
Drew Brees predicts a breakout season for third-year NO WR Tre'Quan Smith.
KC RB Darrel Williams “will be Clyde Edwads-Helaire's direct backup to start the season.”
LAC RB Joshua Kelley “might be having the best training camp of any player on the roster”
Deep dynasty stash: “The Dolphins may have a playmaker in [RB/WR] Malcolm Perry. Perry, the team’s seventh-round draft pick last Apr, appears like a steal through 2 weeks of Dolphins training camp where he has flashed with at least one or several plays in practices that spark excitement and encouragement.”
Deep dynasty stash: DET WR Quintez Cephus “was a good player on tape, but he’s on another level live. There’s a nuance to his routes that goes beyond his years. Despite not being overly fast or big or elusive, he always seems to be open. When he’s not, his body control and hands let him finish plays anyway."
Deep dynasty stash: JAX WR Collin Johnson: “Johnson made multiple plays on Saturday, including an impressive high-point catch over rookie cornerback down the left sideline, a 31-yard touchdown thrown by backup quarterback Joshua Dobbs, (and) one more big-time reception down the field.”
Cold Water:
CAR WR Curtis Samuel: In camp, Samuel "has not been impressive" has "regressed since the first day."
NYJ RB Le’Veon Bell: “has lacked explosiveness in practice, looks slow to hit holes and seems to now lack the vision that once made him arguably the best RB in football. This information is not being gathered from anonymous sources, but two sources I trust implicitly – my left and right eyes.” Meanwhile, RB Frank Gore is never ending: "Frank Gore is the most productive back at Jets training camp. Yes, you read that right. I know Le’Veon Bell is the all-pro, highest-paid, big-play guy with the all-world reputation, but the Jets are getting far more production out of Gore."
IND RB Jonathan Taylor has had some early pass drop struggles in camp.
WAS RB Bryce Love: “Early on he showed burst and speed, but as camp has progressed, Love's workload diminished. In a heavy-hitting scrimmage on Sunday, it didn't appear that Love got any snaps with the first-team offense.”
PIT WR Juju Smith-Schuster “had a spectacular camp last year. This year, it’s been hard to even find him. The reps have been limited, but not much has happened during those reps”
BUF RB Devin Singletary has been having fumbling issues in practice.
Analysis, Theory, & Hype Pieces:
“In 2019 [JAX RB] James Robinson ran for 1997 yards from scrimmage and 18 TDs on 380 touches. 5.26 Yards per touch... He's 5'-9" 219 lbs giving him an 88th percentile BMI to go along with his Burst and Agility. With Fournette out of the picture he is the player to target in Jacksonville.”
