Waiver Weapons - Week Seven:
Each week, Camaron and Chris highlight a player who is available in fewer than 33% of fantasy leagues, and who they believe you can start for the upcoming week (excluding kickers and defenses). Last week Camaron had double duty on the waiver weapons and did a worse job with his opportunities than Jalen Reagor. This week Chris is back, so hopefully Camaron’s waiver magic returns with him.
Camaron’s Pick: Sterling Shepard, WR, TBB (24% rostered on Sleeper) - Mike Evans and Chris Godwin are out, meaning somebody has to step up and catch the ball. After Evans went out, Shepard played the most snaps from the slot position of the non-Godwin players suggesting he could attempt to replicate his fantasy magic. Look to start Shepard against a struggling Falcons secondary. (Though McMillan is our preferred long term target).
Chris’ Pick: Russell Wilson, QB, PIT (28% rostered on Sleeper) - By now, those of you who have been paying attention will know that I am a Jets fan. That means I watched the whole game when Pittsburgh played NY on Sunday night. I certainly didn’t expect Russ to finish as QB3 on the week in his first start with a new team, coming off an injury, and against the supposedly best defense in the league (though our secondary was thin) - but he didn’t just cook, he burned us to a crisp after shaking off a little rust in the first quarter. This week, he gets a much more favorable matchup on paper vs. our blue-clad MetLife roommates, so start him with confidence.
Trade Target Thursday:
Hola! Chris here, back from Mexico, and ready to get back to trading. That’s actually a bit misleading, as I did make a trade while I was down there (#MoneyNeverSleeps [or goes on vacation]), and it was a doozy. This week’s trade target (who has technically been in my crosshairs for the last few weeks) is Kenneth Walker III.
Normally this is the part of the section where I would make my case that you should trade for a guy, but that case is self-evident for K9, who is ranked as the RB8 overall in PPR despite missing two weeks and RB4 on a per-game average basis. Instead (and because we’re running out of room in this newsletter), I’ll just jump into some strategic considerations:
When you’re targeting a top-tier guy, it’s usually going to go one of two ways: you’re giving up a top-tier guy at another position or sending a two-for-one package. My dance partner was thin at RB outside of Walker and Swift, and thus couldn’t afford to give him up for one of my top-tier receivers without a replacement - so I set out to help him add a WR and soften the blow at RB simultaneously.
With that in mind, you don’t need to give up a similarly valued player at the position they’re losing (lest there would be no point in trading), nor do you have to convince them to accept a major downgrade. Sometimes, all they need is to buy a few weeks to figure out a long-term solution, which is what we ended up doing: I gave up Chuba Hubbard, who should be able to replace most of the lost production from Walker until Jonathan Brooks starts to come online.
Even in a deal where it feels like you might be slightly losing out in a vacuum, sometimes a two-for-one still makes sense. You have to consider the value of whoever you add from waivers (or don’t have to drop for roster space if you’re bringing a player off IR) as part of the deal, as well as the points gained weekly from starting your new stud + your “next man up” over the two players you traded away.
We settled on Aiyuk + Hubbard for Walker. Unfortunately for my trade partner, that deal is now effectively Hubbard for Walker (though he does retain the right to keep Aiyuk in the sixth round of next year’s draft if he so chooses). It ended up being a fair deal that would have addressed our teams’ respective needs well, and no one sacrificed too much of their starting lineup (Aiyuk was a starter for me out of necessity, but I now have Brown and Kupp back from injury with Puka returning soon as well).
While I would certainly recommend buying Walker (at the right price) if you can manage it, my goal this week was more broadly to try and help you think creatively about how you might get a player of his caliber on your roster. At the end of the day, you only get points for the guys you’re starting, so consolidating when and where you can isn’t a bad idea as long as you have the depth to support it. Happy trading, y’all!
